Secure Cycle Parking: What next for Huddersfield Station?
Cycle parking facilities are long overdue at key locations in Kirklees. A few places have good installations. We are impressed with the cycle parking now available at University of Huddersfield. Facilities for staff and students have improved on campus in recent years.
What do you think about local facilities for parking your bike or e-bike? What do we really need? Once our rail network is upgraded, what is really going to work? Please do let us know.
Survey
Work started in September on a survey of station users. It asks what would help passengers to walk and cycle to Huddersfield station. We want your views on cycle parking at stations in Kirklees and we have a survey in the Mid-October 24 newsletter.
As we reported in June, the current ‘bike shed’ in Huddersfield station has reduced capacity and will be relocated as part of the work to expand and improve the station – which will be completed in 2028/9. With the ‘bike shed” reinstated, bikes can be parked under cover in the two-level shelter. Responsibility for bike parking on Huddersfield and Dewsbury stations rests with TPE (TransPennine Express), who lease and operate these stations. In the interim, TPE has agreed to support a trial of secure cycle parking at Huddersfield station.
Secure hangars
However, efforts to find spaces outside the station for cycle hangars (housing 5 – 6 bikes each) with secure access have proved difficult. With the regeneration plans for the Station Gateway in flux and Network Rail construction activities taking large amount of car parking space, the project is stalled. For now, funding is available, but time may be against IPKs who are investigating. The project needs at least one car parking space close to the station to base the hangars. Any support or ideas to move this forward would be welcome. The project is handled by EPIKS – who have recently asked Sustrans for help.
