Kirklees Council has recently launched the 2nd stage of consultations on the Dewsbury-Batley-Chidswell corridor. This corridor aims to enable more cycling and walking from Dewsbury ring road to Batley Railway Station along Bradford Road and then up to Chidswell via Challenge Way and Grange Road.
Huddersfield Narrow Canal Path.
Over the summer an upgrade to the Huddersfield Narrow Canal Path was completed as part of the West Yorkshire Combined Authoriy’s City Connect program. This was officially opened earlier in September (see separate report).
The initial programme for “Improving Your Local Walking & Cycling Networks” is now out. The event will run from 10.00 – 13.15 on Saturday 5th November. It will feature speakers on active travel, local case studies of our “greenways” and an overview from Kirklees Council.
In a submission to WYCA on the revised Dewsbury Town Centre Walking and Cycling Improvements, Cycle Kirklees criticises the way the improvements are designed with “shared-use footways and toucan crossings as the primary infrastructure instead of dedicated cycle tracks”.
Active Travel England was quietly formed earlier in year by the Department for Transport. It is the government’s new executive agency responsible for improving standards of cycling and walking infrastructure in England. Councils in England will now face scrutiny over their designs and installations of cycling infrastructure – so could this spell the end of dangerous and unappealing cycle infrastructure?

The Kirklees Cultural Heart proposals form a key part of the Huddersfield Blueprint. The plans, which we generally welcome and support, will effect a transformational change to an underused and rundown part of the town centre.
